Track Lighting

Many people like the idea of installing track lighting in their home, but don’t know where to begin.  There are some basic steps to choosing the best track lighting option for your space, and as long as you carefully follow all of the steps, in order, you will be pleased with the outcome.  See the list below of five steps to choosing track lighting.

Five Steps to Choosing Track Lighting

1.) Evaluate your space

What are your exact lighting needs?  Are there areas of the room that need to be lighted more than others?  Take a look at your ceiling and its height.  Some older homes have low ceilings, and track lighting hangs down a considerable amount.  If the ceiling is too low, track lighting could potentially make it difficult for people to walk below it.  If you do have low ceilings, you can still install track lighting places where people won’t walk, like above couches or in corners.

While you’re evaluating your space, take a good look at your decor.  Track lighting comes in all different styles, so it’s important to choose something that will fit in with the rest of your belongings.  If you have all antique furniture, adding modern LED track lighting might not be the best idea.

2.) Take measurements

Once you’ve determined where you want the track lighting fixtures to go, and you’re sure you have enough room for it, you need to measure.  Track lighting kits come in all different sizes, and it’s important to get the right size kit for your space.  Measure twice for length, and don’t forget to get an idea of how low you’re willing to let the track lighting hang into the room.

3.) Set a budget

It’s important to decide how much you’re willing to spend on your new track lighting before you head to the store.  Include all installation and labor costs when determining your budget.  If you need to have an electrician install the lights, you may want to set aside a larger portion of your budget for installation than for actual materials.

There are a large selection of track lighting kits available at your local home improvement store.  Track lights aren’t all just the simple white spot lights they were years ago.  New designers are getting into the marketplace and are adding unique and interesting lighting options.  For example, Allen Roth lighting fixtures are available at home improvement stores and give a designer look without a designer price tag.

4.) Install your new lights

Follow the directions on the kit to properly install your new light fixtures.  If you’re not sure what you’re doing, or are uncomfortable in any way, it’s best to hire a licensed electrician to do the work for you.  This is especially important if you’re running new electrical lines.

5.) Sit back and enjoy your new track lighting

There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a home improvement project through to completion, and track lighting is no exception.  It’s amazing what a few light bulbs can do to transform the atmosphere of a room.

Now that you know the five steps to choosing track lighting for your home, you have no excuses for your dark, scary corners.  Even if you’re not ready to install new lighting, it never hurts to measure, plan, and browse the home improvement store.  You never know when you’ll find a deal that’s just too good to pass up!
